God’s Spirit Is Powerful
Week of: May 31, 2020
Scripture: Acts 2:1–21; John 20:19–23
ACTIVITY: Let’s Go Fly A Kite
SUPPLIES
Various (see link below)
PREPARE
Use the following link to get ideas for making a homemade kite: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/kite-crafts-for-kids-4126872
RELATE
You are encouraged to build kites this week! Decide what type of kite project would work best for you and your family. You may want to try a couple of different ones. Then, go outside and set them soaring. Some will fly better than others, and that is okay. Notice how the wind and humidity affect your kite. Maybe try flying it on different days or at different times of the day. Just like God’s people are all different, each kite will fly differently. The wind will affect each kite. You can’t see it, but you know it’s there--just like The Holy Spirit which we’ll discover more about in this week’s part of The Big God Story.
Option: If you have your own store-bought kite, how does its shape and size compare with the one you made? How does its overall construction allow it to fly differently than the one you made?

DISCUSSION:
This week in The Big God Story we learned that Jesus gave His disciples (and us) a job to do: go and tell others about the Good News of Jesus! To help them, He told them The Holy Spirit would come upon them and give them power! Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with them when He could no longer be with them in person. When we believe in Jesus, The Holy Spirit is with us too. It helps us do things that we can’t do ourselves.
Questions:
Before He left them and went into heaven, what did Jesus command His disciples to do? (Matthew 28:18–19)
I wonder ... How did the disciples feel at first when Jesus went up to heaven?
I wonder ... What did the disciples think when they heard the wind sound?
I wonder ... What would it be like to speak a language I had never studied?
I wonder ... How do I feel knowing God is with me?
I wonder ... How can I do my job of telling others about Jesus’ love?
I wonder ... How can we receive God's Spirit? (Acts 2:38)
I wonder ... How has God's Spirit changed you?
WORSHIP:
Watch for Jesus! He is always with you! Celebrate with these or any of the other songs!
Song: Holy Spirit
Song: I Am the Way
Song: Go and Make Disciples
Song: Go and Make Disciples (Song 2)

REMEMBER VERSE:
John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Explain: By trusting in God, we allow Him to be our strength. He will help us and give us strength and perseverance (ability to keep going!) in whatever situation we are in. It doesn’t mean we will never be tired physically, but when we get tired, we rest and we constantly talk to God and know that He is with us and we can trust Him to guide us.
Work together to create actions to help remember the verse. Share a video on Facebook or email them to KidVenture.
Perform the Remember Verse in different voices or while jumping, running in place, dancing, etc. Your younger kids in Preschool 4, Kindergarten and 1st grade are used to doing this each Sunday and Wednesday. Ask your kids how they want to say the verse. They have some fantastic ideas!
ACTIVITY: Obstacle Course Fun
SUPPLIES
(These are simply suggestions. Encourage the kids to be creative or even take it outside!)
Masking tape
Rope ladder or rope to make ladder (on floor)
Balloons
Yarn or string
Large hoop(s)
Tunnel or large box

SET UP
Create an obstacle course (outside, in a room, throughout the house, etc)
RELATE
Children, today in The Big God Story we heard how God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us follow the right path. Let’s make an obstacle course and then follow it! The Holy Spirit helps us stay on the right path, just like we need to follow the right path to get through the obstacle course! Make sure to stay on the right path! Keep going until you reach the end. If anyone has trouble, offer a helping hand just as we should throughout our life with others.

ACTIVITY: Origami Dove
SUPPLIES
Paper
Scissors (to cut the paper a square, if needed)
SET UP
Have your supplies ready! Follow along with this video to make an origami dove—pause as needed:
RELATE
In our Christian faith, The Holy Spirit is often symbolized (or pictured) as a dove. The Bible even refers to The Holy Spirit descending (coming down) like a dove during Jesus’ baptism. Make a dove and let it remind you that The Holy Spirit is always with you.
PRAYER TIME: Sharing of Joys and Concerns & Praying Together
Gather the children and say: Let’s pray together. Share praises and prayers. Using the phrase, “How can I pray for you?” is open-ended and encourages responses.
Go around the group and share joys and concerns. Encourage each person to share. Then, close by praying together. Allow all who want to pray out loud a chance to share. You could have one start then move to another, another, and so on. You are encouraged to take a turn also.
BLESSING:
Ask your children to hold out their hands to receive this blessing you speak over them. A blessing implies a future hope, so speak these words with hope for your children!
Name(s), Jesus loves you! May you always remember that The Holy Spirit will give you everything you need to follow God each day. You are so special to God and He created you for a purpose. Always remember your job is to tell people that God loves them. Amen.
