Lesson: Soar Like Eagles

Week of: May 10

Scripture: Isaiah 40:28–31; Proverbs 23:7

ACTIVITY: Run and Grow Weary

RELATE

Go outside and run around (your yard, your block, etc) for two minutes. Put your hand over your heart. Is it beating faster than usual? Are you tired at all yet? Are you breathing harder than usual yet? Run some more! How long can you run before you consider yourself tired? Run!

WATCH THE MESSAGE:

BIBLE ACTIVITY:

Read Isaiah 40:28-31; Proverbs 23:7

DISCUSSION:

In the message today we heard about being an Eagle-like Christian--that sounds kind of funny, doesn’t it? We heard about many characteristics of eagles (things eagles do), that make them different than other birds. They are bold and strong, they are loyal and devoted which means they stick together with others they care about and they take care of themselves. There are a lot of things we can learn from eagles that also demonstrate how to be a good follower of Jesus.

Questions:

  • How do you help your family and take care of one another?

  • Have you become more or less caring of each other while you’ve been at home more together?

  • What is one additional thing you could do to help care for your family or loved ones during this time?

  • It’s been more difficult to show love to people while we haven’t been able to be together. What is one thing you could do to show someone else who doesn’t live with you that you love them during this time?

  • Do you have trouble waiting for God and instead try to figure out answers to a situation all on your own? Eagles wait for the wind to help them to soar. What is one situation in your life that would be easier if you waited for God to give you clearer direction?

  • Do you trust that God will let you soar?

WORSHIP:

Watch for Jesus! He is always with you! Celebrate with these or any of the other songs!

Song: Soar

Song: Good Good Father

For additional songs, see the KidVenture Online Format Week 3 lesson

Remember Verse:

Isaiah 40:31

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

  • Explain: By trusting in God, we allow Him to be our strength. He will help us and give us strength and perseverance (ability to keep going!) in whatever situation we are in. It doesn’t mean we will never be tired physically, but when we get tired, we rest and we constantly talk to God and know that He is with us and we can trust Him to guide us.

  • Work together to create actions to help remember the verse. Share a video on Facebook or email them to KidVenture.

  • Perform the Remember Verse in different voices or while jumping, running in place, dancing, etc. Your younger kids in Preschool 4, Kindergarten and 1st grade are used to doing this each Sunday and Wednesday. Ask your kids how they want to say the verse. They have some fantastic ideas!

ACTIVITY: Which Bird Are You?

RELATE

Read through these facts we know about different types of birds together. You could also act out what you know about sounds and actions each bird makes. Not sure what they all look like or sound like? Google images of the name of the bird!

*Some phones are able to even help you produce a 3D image of an eagle right in your room! Search for Eagle and then click where it says “Meet a life-sized eagle up close”

  • Chicken – Content to keep their heads down. Scratch in the dirt for food. Never reach full potential. Flap their wings but don’t fly far. Usually live in enclosed spaces. When storms come they race for the chicken coop in anxious worry.

  • Kookaburra – Seems to be the life of the party. Laughs at everything, but not always sensitive to the feelings of others.

  • Parrot – Can only imitate what they have heard. They talk the talk but that’s it. Say the right things but don’t live sincerely.

  • Buzzard – Attracted to brokenness and death. Drawn to people with problems but not because they want to help. They want to get in on it.

  • Cuckoo – Lazy. They don’t build their own nests. Look for a nest that’s already made to lay their eggs in. They leave their babies to be cared for by other birds.

  • Eagle – Not fearful. Face into a storm and use its power to lift off and soar. Build giant nests in high places and make them bigger as their family grows. They are loyal and dedicated to their family. They don’t flap their wings much so they don’t get tired out—they just soar on the current. They can see for miles. Flies higher and higher to find safety (closer to God). They take care of themselves--cleaning themselves and taking time to rest in the sun.

DISCUSSION

  • What kind of a bird are you at home? At school?  With your friends?

  • Do you act like any of these birds in other situations?

  • In what ways are you already like an eagle? (do you take care of yourself well, care for your family, not flap a lot in worry, etc)

  • In what ways could you try to become more like an eagle?

ACTIVITY: Flying Contest

SUPPLIES

  • Paper, foam sheets, other items to make lightweight airplanes with

  • A large space like your backyard or an open field

RELATE

Invite everyone to use the agreed upon supplies to craft and create an airplane or flying device of their own. Share about your plane as you create. You might even hold a contest to see whose is the most creative (Idea: share on your social media and ask your friends to vote). Then hold a contest to see whose can fly the farthest. Try the best 2 out of 3 flights or 4 out of 5 flights to make it more fun.

ACTIVITY: Watch for Eagles

RELATE

Head out to an open area where you may be able to see eagles. Comlara Park or Lake Bloomington may be good areas. Spend some time hiking and enjoying nature.

PRAYER TIME: Sharing of Joys and Concerns & Praying Together

Gather the children and say:  Let’s pray together. Share praises and prayers. Using the phrase, “How can I pray for you?” is open-ended and encourages responses.

Go around the group and share joys and concerns. Encourage each person to share. Then, close by praying together. Allow all who want to pray out loud a chance to share.  You could have one start then move to another, another, and so on. You are encouraged to take a turn also.

BLESSING:

Ask your children to hold out their hands to receive this blessing you speak over them. A blessing implies a future hope, so speak these words with hope for your children!

Name(s), God loves you! Keep your hope in God and rest knowing that He will guide you if you let Him. Talk to Him. Listen to Him. He made you just the way you are and wants you to Soar like eagles! Amen.
